Practical guide to certifications for motorcycle jackets and pants

EN 17092

How do certifications for motorcycle clothing products work? We at Motostorm offer you in this article a practical guide for motorcycle jackets and trousers.

Read a label: CE and PPE

Every product that is marketed, be it technological or an item of clothing, must have the CE mark printed on the label which indicates that it complies with certain conformity standards established by the European Union. Jackets, overalls, trousers, gloves and protections fall into the category of so-called PPE, i.e. personal protective equipment; these devices must pass specific tests in order to be marketed and certified with the CE mark. This mark on the product label will be accompanied by the European standard in force at that time regarding certifications, that is the EN 17092.

The EN 17092 standard

The year in which the European Union made specific certifications for motorcycle PPE mandatory is 2019, before then there was the EN 13595 standard as a certification standard, in force since 2002, which however it was valid only for clothing for professional use. The new EN 17092 standard provides for the division of garments into five resistance classes:

  • Class AAA: clothing with a maximum level of protection;
  • Class AA: clothing with a medium level of protection;
  • Class A: clothing with a light level of protection;
  • Class B: limited abrasion protection clothing, to be used together with shoulder and elbow protectors;
  • Class C: protective clothing against impact injuries, to be used together with other types of clothing.
To determine the resistance class of a product, the standard provides for a division of the "at risk" areas of the human body from the most exposed to the least exposed:
  • Zone 1: shoulders, elbows, hips and knees;
  • Zone 2: arms, back, buttocks and external part of the legs;
  • Zone 3: chest, abdomen, inside arms, inside and back of legs.
These areas are subjected to tests such as the Darmstadt test for abrasion which consists in the slipping of the material you want to test on the asphalt.
